MEN’s FORUM The Men’s Forum have been active with a number of further enjoyable trips out arranged since the last Newsletter. In May the group had lunch at the Royal Horse, Leamington Spa before having a tour of the Guide Dogs National Centre at Bishops Tachbrook. The tour around the state-of-the-art facility proved to be both inter-active and informative detailing how every guide dog journey starts with the Centres life-changing puppies and their important work in helping people with sight loss to lead independent lives. June saw the group visit the RAF Museum, Midlands at Cosford and learn more about the unique history of the RAF and view the vast array of aircraft and displays in several hangars, including the National Cold War Exhibition, War in the Air, RAF Stories: the first 100 years (1918-2018) and Art Exhibition. In July we made a return visit to the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Steam Railway and enjoyed a journey from Toddington Station to Cheltenham Racecourse Station and return. On arrival back at Toddington we went for an excellent lunch at The Pheasant Inn to round off another enjoyable day out. A Carvery Lunch at The Round of Gras, Badsey is planned for August and a visit to Forge Mill Needle Museum Redditch is programmed for September. As well as the trips out, the Men’s Forum continue to meet monthly at St Mary and St Egwin’s Catholic Church Hall, High Street, Evesham with a two course lunch provided by Working World. Forthcoming Meeting Dates are: Wednesday 17 July, Wednesday 18 September, Wednesday 16 October, Wednesday 20 November and Wednesday 11 December - all commencing at 12.00 p.m. New Members are always welcome and should you know of anyone interested in joining then please pass on my contact details - Mobile: 07970 568696 or Email: mervynleggett49@gmail.com
MEN’s FORUM The Men’s Forum continues to hold a monthly informal meeting over a two course lunch provided by Working World at St. Mary and St. Egwin’s Catholic Church Hall, High Street, Evesham on the third Wednesday of the month. In August, with Working World taking a well-earned holiday, the lunch was held at The Round of Gras, Badsey with the majority of members in attendance opting for the Carvery. On the 3rd September members enjoyed a visit to the Forge Mill Needle Museum in Redditch, having a guided tour of the museum and looking round the Visitor Centre. It was a fascinating place to visit and realise the remarkable number of processes needed to produce sewing and other needles in bygone days. Models and recreated scenes provided a good illustration of how needles were once made and how the Redditch Area once produced 90% of the world’s needles! After the museum tour the group enjoyed an excellent three course buffet lunch at the Kings Court Hotel, Alcester to round off another enjoyable day out. New Members are always welcome and should you know of anyone interested in joining the Men’s Forum then please pass on my contact details - Mobile: 07970 568696 or Email: mervynleggett49@gmail.com MERVYN LEGGETT
Members were invited by Emma Stokes and the late Peter Griffiths to visit Envirosort at Norton to see how our recycling is sorted. Very interesting, if you get a chance to go I recommend it. We saw what you can and can't recycle and the technology that makes it happen. Unusual things found on the conveyor belt ranged from a snake to a full sized replica broad sword, both of which should have been in recycling. If in doubt put in the black bin. We were pleased to hear that the black bin waste gets incinerated and turned into electricity so not a complete waste. Interesting fact... one drinks can can be recycled to heat three microwaveable meals!
The first quarter of 2024 has seen the Men’s Forum hold their monthly meetings and lunch at the Orto Lounge and Monica’s Fish Bar and Café whilst Working World reorganise following their move from Wallace House to The Station House. From April onwards we will be meeting at St Mary and St Egwin’s Catholic Church Hall, High Street, Evesham from where Working World will resume serving lunches. Our first trip of the year took place in early April when we visited Weston’s Cider Mill at Much Marcle, Ledbury where we enjoyed a tour of the Mill and a tasting session, followed by lunch in the Scrumpy House Restaurant. In May we will be visiting the Guide Dogs National Centre at Bishops Tachbrook, Leamington and in June we plan to visit RAF Cosford. Quarter 2 Meeting Dates are: Wednesday 17 April; Wednesday 15 May and Wednesday 19 June commencing at 12.00 p.m. New Members are always welcome and should you know of anyone interested in joining then please pass on my contact details - Mobile: 07970 568696 or Email: mervynleggett49@gmail.com

Read MoreFollowing a successful merger earlier in 2024, Age UK Worcester, Malvern Hills and Hereford Localities are delighted to have been given the go ahead by Age UK National to operate under a new working title, Age UK Wyvern. After over 8 months of the challenges of answering the phone with the longest greeting ever, and following consultation with our staff team, clients and neighbouring brand partners, the blend of Severn and Wye as a nod to the rivers that flow through the counties we serve was agreed as the perfect option. Not to be confused with the mythical beast! This will trigger the start of a rebrand and refresh of our retail offer, which is growing from 12 to 13 shops in the next few months, with our newest venture opening in Barnard’s Green later this year. The retail team are excited for a new corporate image across the board with the new signage and shopfronts, complete with information points to offer local signposting to services. We continue to consult with older people in their communities to develop and grow our services, responding to their needs, where they live. Our new initiative to connect those people feeling lonely and isolated in their communities is the result of over a year of roadshows, feedback from clients and collaboration with other local organisations to coproduce positive connected communities, with opportunities to learn, share and thrive, not just exist. The service we have been delivering across Worcester, Malvern Hills and Herefordshire for over 40 years will not be affected by the new name; the merger has given us the opportunity to consolidate, consult and be more agile in our approach to supporting those most in need. Age UK Wyvern marks a new beginning. A strong, cohesive team facing the challenges of an increasing ageing population, supporting those who need us to improve and sustain their financial, physical and mental wellbeing. Always with a professional approach and a smile. Please be patient with us while we roll out our new brand across the area but rest assured that our service will not be affected while we do so.
NPC Annual Review 2024 Writer's picture: National Pensioners Convention National Pensioners Convention 3 days ago 4 min read The NPC’s website has details of all our campaigns, policies and published newsletters, and this review highlights key points during what was a very busy year for the NPC. The biggest area of campaigning during the year was, by far, the withdrawal of the Winter Fuel Payment from all pensioners except those who receive Pension Credit. The announcement in July took everyone by surprise and met with an immediate response and widespread opposition. An Age UK petition opposing the withdrawal, supported by the NPC, received over half a million signatures. The NPC organised a protest demonstration in Parliament Square on 7 October, followed by a lobby of Parliament, and Jonathan Safir, for the NPC, gave oral evidence on pensioner poverty to the Works & Pensions Select Committee on 18 December. A special appeal to affiliates to support our campaigning on this issue received over £15,000 and this level of support for an important NPC campaign is greatly appreciated. It is estimated that 1 in 6 older people currently live in poverty and the withdrawal of the Winter Fuel Payment is one of the many challenges they face. Independent Age launched a campaign on poverty in later life to draw attention to the hidden two million pensioners who live in poverty and the NPC has supported this initiative. The NPC continues to campaign for a state pension set at 70% of the Living Wage, and a National Care Service free at the point of use. A further setback last year was the decision in December not to compensate women who had been affected by the increase in state pension age. A report by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman in July 2021, which found there had been maladministration by the DWP, had raised hope that some compensation would be paid. In an unwelcome move just before Christmas, the Government announced they did not accept the Ombudsman’s conclusions and no compensation would be paid. The NPC has supported the WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaign since its inception, and will continue to work with them to try and secure a just outcome for the estimated 3.6 million women who were affected by the changes in pension age for women. A decision that tax thresholds will again be increased from 2028 has provided some re-assurance that the problem of fiscal drag will eventually be addressed, but the issues caused by the freezing of the thresholds since 2022 remain. As pensions increase, but the tax threshold remains frozen, so more older people are brought back into the tax bracket, or move from one bracket to another. This is increasing tax by stealth and the NPC continues to campaign for tax thresholds to be increased at least in line with inflation. Before the general election the NPC issued its manifesto for older people, the theme of which was to build a better future for today’s and tomorrow’s pensioners. The NPC urged all political parties to prioritise policies that will provide dignity and security for everybody, particularly people in later life. One key campaign is for a Commissioner for Older People in all the countries of the UK. Such Commissioners already exist in Wales and Northern Ireland, and they have been a great success. Similar Commissioners are needed in England and Scotland, and the campaign for them has achieved widespread support across all political parties and amongst all organisations in the voluntary sector. The NPC has organised other events during 2024. On 6 March, the day of the last Conservative budget, the NPC protested outside Parliament over the number of cold home winter deaths. The Biennial Delegate Conference was held in March, with affiliate representatives attending and setting policies for the NPC to follow. The Annual Convention was held in September in Blackpool, with interesting speakers from a wide range of organisations. The packed programme included sessions on growing pensioner poverty, the need for a strategy on ageing, the challenges of a digital world, rising privatisation in the NHS and social care, and the need for older and younger people to work together on climate change. Also in September the NPC held a webinar to mark Dignity Action Day, which aims to end digital poverty. The NPC issues regular Campaign Bulletins and emails subscribers with information on all our campaigns and the activities of our Working Parties. The work the NPC does could not be achieved without the support of affiliates, all our volunteers, and especially the small team of hard working staff at Head Office. A process has begun looking at the NPC’s structure, which aims to secure our future, and the National Executive has endorsed proposals in “The Need for Change” document that was sent to all affiliates. The NPC is the only national campaign group which is run by pensioners for pensioners. We receive regular press and TV coverage on issues affecting older people. The NPC appreciates your continued support. We will shortly be invoicing for the renewal of affiliations and prompt payment would be appreciated to assist our cash flow. Or if you would like to join the NPC, find out more on www.npcuk.org/join-the-npc. If you are also able to add a donation, we would be very grateful as this enables the continuation of NPC’s work.
